What a coldkey is
A coldkeycontrols your Bittensor funds. Its public address identifies you as a GM affiliate and receives your rewards. In Bittensor's address format, it starts with 5. Wallet extensions can display the same account in other network formats.
Your seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic, restores access to your wallet. Whoever has it controls the wallet. Keep it private.
Use the Taostats Wallet, or btcli if you work in a terminal.
Option A: the Taostats Wallet
The wallet from the team behind taostats.io, built for Bittensor. The Taostats sign-in page recommends it, and it takes a few minutes to set up.
Browser extension
- Install the Taostats Wallet from the Chrome Web Store in Chrome, Brave or Edge, and pin it to your toolbar.
- Open it and create a new wallet. Write the recovery phrase down on paper when it appears.
- Copy your address. It starts with 5 and is the coldkey you sign in with and get paid to.
Phone app
The Taostats app for iPhone and Android shows your balance and the alpha rewards that arrive. Restore the same wallet in it with your recovery phrase. GM sign-in uses the browser extension, so a wallet you start on your phone also goes into the extension the same way.
Option B: btcli in your terminal
btcli is Bittensor's command-line tool. It ships with the bittensor Python package and needs Python 3.10 to 3.14.
1. Install. These commands use Bash or Zsh on macOS or Linux. First install uv, then run:
uv venv && source .venv/bin/activateuv pip install "bittensor==11.1.0" "typer==0.26.0"The typer pin lets btcli 11.1.0 exit cleanly. Keep using this terminal for the steps below.
2. Create a coldkey.
btcli wallet new-coldkey -w gm-payoutFollow the password prompt to encrypt the key on this computer. Write down the mnemonic (seed phrase) when it appears. The command also prints your public address as ss58.
3. Where it lives. With the default settings, the wallet is saved in ~/.bittensor/wallets/gm-payout/:
coldkeyis your key, encrypted with your password.coldkeypub.txtholds your public address.
To restore this btcli wallet on a new computer, install btcli and run btcli wallet regen-coldkey -w gm-payout. It prompts for the mnemonic and a new password.
Keep your seed phrase safe
- Keep physical backups in separate, private places. Paper copies or a metal backup help protect against loss.
- Keep the phrase offline and private.Enter it only in your own wallet's recovery process.
- It's your only recovery. Your password unlocks the wallet on one device; the seed phrase restores it on any device. Nobody, including saygm.com and Taostats, can recover it for you.
- Nobody at saygm.com will ever ask for it.Signing in and getting paid use only your public address and a signature. Anyone asking for your seed phrase, private key or "hex seed" is trying to take your wallet.
Sign in with Taostats
On Get your referral link, sign in with Taostats. The Taostats page offers both signing methods:
- Sign with browser extension: click this button and allow Taostats Auth to access your account in the extension. If several accounts appear, choose your coldkey account and click Sign with selected account. Review and approve the message signature in the extension.
Sign with btcli in your terminal: click this button to load a message. For btcli 11.1.0, the wallet flag form is
btcli wallet sign -w <wallet>. Use the command below, replacingMESSAGE_FROM_PAGEwith the exact text between quotes after--messageon the page. This command signs with the coldkey ingm-payout:btcli wallet sign -w gm-payout --message 'MESSAGE_FROM_PAGE'Enter your wallet password if prompted. Paste the value of
signed_messageinto Signature and the value ofsigner_addressinto SS58 address of the key you signed with, then click Authorize. If the message expires, click Get new challenge and sign the new message.
The signature proves you control the wallet. Sign with your coldkey: its address is your affiliate identity and payout address. If you run a miner or validator, keep the hotkey for subnet work.
How your rewards arrive
After the reward's hold period and payment checks, GM's EVM custody contract on Subtensor transfers alpha staketo your coldkey on the GM subnet. The stake stays on the pool's payout hotkey, with your coldkey as its owner. GM funds transaction fees, so a wallet with a zero TAO balance can receive rewards. Affiliates never call the contract or submit a claim transaction. Rewards below the chain's transfer minimum remain unpaid until they can be transferred.
Your affiliate page shows rewards and payouts. It is public, and coldkey addresses, payment amounts and payment times are public on chain.
To see your alpha on taostats.io, open https://taostats.io/account/<your coldkey address>.
